Hurricane Florence Recovery at Camp Lejeune, New River, and Cherry Point

MCAS Cherry Point, MCB Camp Lejeune, and MCAS New River, North Carolina

In support of Task Force Florence, Michael Baker is providing architecture and engineering design-build services at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, Marine Corp Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River in North Carolina as part of the Military Construction (MILCON) and Sustainment, Restoration and Modernization recovery efforts. As Designer of Record (DOR), Michael Baker is providing construction documents, specifications and design support services during construction for more than $1 billion of new construction and renovation, including 30 buildings and 12 different facility types that sustained severe structural and water intrusion damage during Hurricane Florence.

At MCAS Cherry Point, DOR services provided the replacement of a motor transportation and communication shop, the main fire station and a smaller satellite fire station. Recovery efforts at MCB Camp Lejeune provided a new Battle Simulation Center, warehouse facility, three Marine regimental headquarter (HQ) facilities, four combat logistics battalion HQ facilities, one engineering support battalion HQ facility and replacement facilities for the Environmental Management Division. At MCAS New River, DOR services provided for a new three-module Type II aircraft maintenance hangar, aircraft parking apron, access apron and parking garage to support CH-53K operations and a new modified Type I aircraft maintenance hangar and squadron operations building.

All designs incorporate unique antiterrorism/force protection features and Department of Defense and Department of the Navy principles for high performance and sustainable building requirements to enhance mission readiness and environmental stewardship.

Michael Baker’s design-build recovery efforts also include the replacement of the Onslow Beach Bridge, White Oak River Trestle Bridge and Queen Creek Trestle Bridge. The Onslow Beach Bridge is the single permanent transportation link between Onslow Beach and MCB Camp Lejeune. The White Oak River Trestle Bridge and the Queen Creek Trestle Bridge are located along the railroad route that serves as the primary heavy logistics supply.

Michael Baker’s services will help restore day-to-day operations at the military bases and improve Marine Corps mission readiness by providing enhanced, resilient infrastructure and building solutions designed to withstand extreme conditions and catastrophic weather events.
