Texas A&M University System RELLIS Campus

College Station, Texas

Texas A&M University, the state of Texas’ first public institution of higher education, founded in 1876, has expanded significantly since opening its doors 150 years ago. Westward expansion to the RELLIS Campus—on the site of a WWII and Korean War air training ground—ensured that the wide berth of land was used for technological innovation, which now reaches across emergency management training, ballistics proving ground and advanced research fields backed by national and international corporations. Michael Baker is proud that its team members have brought their skills to bear on this innovative and forward-thinking part of the Texas A&M University system in furtherance of this integrated education, research and on-site testing campus.

Michael Baker has delivered a wide range of mechanical, electrical and plumbing+ (MEP+) engineering services across the RELLIS Campus. Such projects showcase the complex, multidisciplinary designs which advance the needs of higher education facilities. The work itself fundamentally supports impactful academic and research initiatives alongside real-world applications, tested on-site to ensure continued progress in advancing the sciences.

  • RELLIS Central Administration Building Renovation: The team provided MEP+ services to leverage a historic structure for modernization and renovation. A full overhaul across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, sanitary and power controls systems was required, while leveraging the use of the old hardwood beams and staying true to the building’s unique original design.
  • Texas Engineering Extension Services (TEES) RELLIS Law Enforcement Officer Training Center: The team provided MEP+ designs across locker rooms, aerobic and weight training gymnasiums, locker rooms and training rooms. The facility is designed to meet LEED® certification criteria for sustainable design.
  • TEES Ballistic Aero-Optics Material (BAM) Facility: The BAM facility is a high-performance site for ordinance testing, part of the George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex. The team provided MEP services for a ground-up construction of a kilometer-long high-performance testing range, designed to enable military and aerospace engineers a viable testing platform for next-generation applied materials research.
  • George Bush Combat Development Complex-Innovation Proving Grounds (BCDC-IPG): The team delivered comprehensive MEP+ services across 310 acres, supporting off-road combat vehicle testing. Key features included a self-contained 4G/5G LTE+ communications network, a cybersecurity and data capture facility, a lookout tower, and two pre-fabricated/pre-engineered metal buildings for equipment storage and maintenance. Additionally, the project incorporated a specialized lighting system designed for user-controlled adjustments to optimize training environments at the proving grounds.
  • Texas Division of Emergency Management Warehouse Facility (TDEM-WHSE):
This 70,000-square-foot facility required comprehensive MEP+ services, including multiple HVAC and air-handling systems, exhaust air systems, advanced air filtration and extensive plumbing solutions, such as gas piping and sump and storm pumping. The electrical design addressed diverse lighting requirements throughout the warehouse, break room, office spaces, meeting rooms and shower facilities.
